Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasized the transformative power of youth in shaping the future of Indian governance during the 35th Regional Level Youth Parliament Competition at Kendriya Vidyalaya (OIL) in Duliajan. Speaking at the event, Sonowal encouraged the younger generation to actively participate in local governance and politics, stressing their role in driving societal progress.
Sonowal commended the Youth Parliament Competition for its role in educating young minds about the importance of democratic values while inspiring them to contribute to nation-building. He noted that the involvement of youth is essential in tackling modern challenges such as climate change, digital governance, and social justice, stating, “The fresh ideas and perspectives that youth bring are vital for meaningful social transformation and the betterment of our nation.”
The Minister also highlighted the importance of youth participation in the democratic process, pointing out that it ensures their concerns are represented in policymaking, which leads to more inclusive and effective governance. He warned that political disengagement could lead to a less dynamic democracy and stressed the need for a vibrant youth presence in political discussions.
Discussing the significance of India’s diverse democracy, Sonowal remarked, “India’s democratic strength lies in its ability to unite over 1.4 billion people, embracing cultural, linguistic, and religious diversity under one constitutional framework.”
Addressing the youth of Assam and the Northeast, Sonowal emphasized their critical role in preserving and promoting the region’s cultural heritage and fostering unity among diverse communities. He urged them to leverage their entrepreneurial spirit to stimulate economic growth in sectors like agriculture, tourism, and information technology.
Sonowal further highlighted the potential of youth-led initiatives in transforming Assam into a hub for skilled labor, attracting investment, and generating employment. “By embracing technology, entrepreneurship, and social initiatives, the youth can play a key role in enhancing governance and addressing issues like corruption and transparency,” he added.
Sonowal praised the Youth Parliament initiative, emphasizing its importance in nurturing a new generation of leaders who are more attuned to the needs and aspirations of Assam’s younger population. He called on the youth to actively engage in political discussions, exercise their right to vote, and consider careers in public service, contributing to a more participative and robust democracy that benefits all citizens.
