In an unprecedented special drive against spitting during April 2025, Sealdah Division has recorded a staggering 6,193 instances of spitting and collected a huge amount of fine ₹7,61,070 at almost all stations across the division.
Spitting in public places, including Railway premises, is indeed a punishable offense under the Indian Railways (Penalties for Activities Affecting Cleanliness at Railway Premises) Rules, 2012. Specifically, Rule 3(b) prohibits spitting in Railway premises & Rule 4 imposes a fine of up to ₹500 for violating this rule.
The alarming number of spitting cases detected during last month highlight a disturbing public trend of disregard for cleanliness and community hygiene within Railway premises.
Rajeev Saxena, DRM of Sealdah, has stated that, “the number of spitting cases detected in a single month is truly disheartening. While we are taking stringent action through these drives, it underscores the urgent need for greater public awareness and a rapid change in civic behavior”.
Maintaining the cleanliness of our Railway premises is a collective social responsibility. Let’s work together to keep our Railway stations and circulating area clean and healthy. Passengers & Rail users must refrain from spitting at stations and concourse area. Please cooperate with the Railway authority in maintaining clean and healthy environment for better travel experiences.
