Dr Sarma first elected as an MLA from Jhalukbari in 2001 as a Congress candidate. He defeated AGP leader Bhrigu Kumar Phukan.
In 2015 Sarma left Congress and join BJP.
In 2016 Sarma first elected as a BJP candidate from the Jhalukbari Constituency of Assam.
In 2021 , Dr Sarma elected as a BJP candidate from the Jhalukbari Constituency of Assam.
