Dispur, January 8: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today handed over appointment letters to the next of the kin of those who lost their lives in the Nimatighat ferry capsize incident in the Brahmaputra at a simple function held at the conference hall of Chief Minister’s Office in Janata Bhawan here today.
It may be noted that the ill feted ferry which met with an accident at Nimatighat on 8 September 2021 was carrying passengers to Majuli. However, 89 passengers were rescued and three namely Parimita Das, Indreswar Bora and Dr. Bikramjit Baruah lost their lives. Following the incident, the State Cabinet which met on 10 December took decision to give government jobs to the family members of the persons who died in the accident.
Chief Minister Dr. Sarma handed over the appointment letters to Madhumita Das, sister of late Parimaita Das and Ruprekha Bora Senapati widow of late Indreswar Bora. Madhumita Das is given appointment as Assistant Professor in SCERT while Ruprekha Bora Senapati is appointed in Grade IV job in a school in her home district. Though Dr. Bikramjit Baruah was the third victim of the capsize incident, since he was a physician in government hospital, his family would keep getting the full salary till the superannuation of the deceased.
Chief Minister Dr. Sarma during his brief interaction at the programme said that his government as a token of its empathy and sensibility to loss of human lives and give succor to the family decided to provide government jobs to the eligible family members of the deceased. He also asked the Education department to work with Finance department to ensure that the appointees get their first salary in time, without having them to approach any department for their salary. With regard to Dr. Bikramjit Baruah, the Chief Minister said that along with regular salaries if his family at any given point in time needs financial help, government will stand by the family.
Reiterating his government’s commitment to provide jobs to the next of the kin of those who died because of extraordinary consequences, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said that his government was also very steadfast in providing jobs to the family members of the men in uniform who died while protecting the state along Assam-Mizoram interstate boundary.
Chief Minister Dr. Sarma wished the appointees all the very best and remembered the departed souls.
Chief Minister’s Political Secretary Jayanta Malla Baruah, Education Adviser to government of Assam Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta and others were present at the programme.
