United Nation’s theme for this year’s observance is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” in recognition and celebration of the women and girls who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation and response and to honour their leadership and contribution towards a sustainable future.
The year 2022 is pivotal for achieving gender equality in the context of climate change, and environmental and disaster risk reduction, which are some of the greatest global challenges of the twenty-first century. Without gender equality today, a sustainable future, and an equal future, remains beyond our reach.
The theme highlights how women can be made equal partners in the decision-making process especially with regard to policymaking. This day celebrates the cultural, political, economic and social achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action to achieve gender parity. The IWD is also significant in a way it spurs us to make people aware about women’s rights, gender equality, safety and prevention of any kind of harassment.
The day also helps us to reflect on the extraordinary roles played by women in almost every walk of life and celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women. Though countries across the world have made great advancements, gender equality remains an unfulfilled dream. Bringing love, empathy, care and positivity in our lives, women as mothers, sisters, best friends and wives change our outlook towards others and make our lives worth living.
