CENTRAL NODAL OFFICERS FOR JAL SHAKTI ABHIYAN: CATCH THE RAIN 2022 ON INSPECTION IN LUNGLEI DISTRICT

Central Nodal Officer of JAL SHAKTI ABHIYAN: CATCH THE RAIN 2022 Shri Pawan Kumar, Director, Ministry of Minority Affairs, Govt of India and Central Technical Officer Shri Jeeta Ram, Deputy Director, Central Water Commission (CWC), Ministry of Jal Shakti, Govt of India who are on a three day inspection at Lunglei District reached Lunglei town last night, and held a meeting with concerned officials today at Lunglei DC Conference Hall.

Lunglei DC Pu Kulothungan A along with officials of Line Departments – PHED, DRDO, Irrigation & Water Resources, EF&CC, Fisheries, Agriculture & NEIDA were present at today’s meeting.

Lunglei District Jal Shakti Abhiyan District Nodal Officer Er Zodingpuia, SDO, PHED gave a powerpoint presentation on the main initiatives in Lunglei District under the scheme.

Lunglei District has set up ‘Jal Shakti Kendra’ for the District at PHED Rural Watsan Lunglei Office. The District has also completed GIS Mapping of all the water bodies under various Line Departments, and is implementing the project on a convergence mode, for which ‘District Level Convergence Committee for Jal Shakti Abhiyan’ has been established.

Various initiatives such as Farmers’ Mela, Afforestation, awareness programs, contour trenching have been implemented in the District under this scheme. Under the Rural Development Department, 45 water bodies in the District have been rejuvenated under the Amrit Sarovar Scheme, with an additional 30 currently in the process of implementation.

Under the High Powered Committee (HPC), Lunglei District, a 100 lakhs ‘HPC WATER STORAGE PILOT PROJECT’ was initiated this year in the District under which 6 Demountable Tanky for rainwater harvesting and two Water Storage Tank for Emergency Response to be used in case of fire emergency were installed and 8 water reservoirs were restored.

North East Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA) are travelling across the District and conducting awareness campaigns for the scheme.

The Central officials expressed their appreciation for the hard work put in by District officials, and encouraged them to continue to prioritize the project.

After the meeting, the team proceeded to visit various sites in and around Lunglei town.

The Jal Shakti Abhiyan was launched by the Ministry of Jal Shakti in 2019. It is a campaign for water conservation and water security in the country through a collaborative effort of various ministries of the Government of India and state governments.
