Acting on specific intelligence, Border Outpost Vijaypur’s jawans from the 54th Battalion of the South Bengal Frontier apprehended a smuggler with gold ornaments and US $33,000 as he attempted to cross the border fence. The seized gold ornaments weigh 301 grams and are valued at approximately Rs.17,78,910/-.
On May 16, 2023, jawans at the Vijaypur border outpost received information about a smuggler could attempt to cross the border fence with gold ornaments. Following this, jawans conducted a search operation and laid an ambush in the area. After a while, they spotted a suspicious person carrying a bag walking towards the border. The jawans chased and challenged him, and although the smuggler attempted to flee, they apprehended him.
The jawans seized six gold bangles, thirty-nine gold bracelets, and US $33,000 from the smuggler’s possession. They brought him to the outpost for questioning. The apprehended smuggler has been identified as Tanmoy Biswas from District Nadia.
During interrogation, the smuggler revealed that he had been involved in smuggling for the past six months, and that Shyamal Biswas and Balai Biswas, both residents of Chandpur in District Nadia, had given him the goods. The goods were to be handed over to Amit Pramanik and Tapas Pramanik, residents of village Vijaypur in District Nadia, near the border line. The smuggler was to receive Rs. 1,000 for his work.
The Customs Office in Banpur received the apprehended smuggler and the seized goods for further legal action.

Additionally, the South Bengal Frontier has issued another number, 9903472227, for WhatsApp or voice messages regarding gold smuggling. A suitable reward will be given to anyone providing concrete information, and their identity will be kept confidential.
