Celebration of World Kitchen Garden Day on 27th August, 2023 in Guwahati

World Kitchen Garden Day is celebrated in Guwahati on 27th August, 2023 by Urban Khet organizing an workshop on urban farming. Urban Khet has organized the workshop also as an outreach programme with Royal Global University. World Kitchen Garden Day is celebrated on the last Sunday of August to celebrate the positive role of organic kitchen gardening and also to raise awareness about the benefits of eating local and encourage people to explore local options in their areas.

Urban Khet is an organization working towards sustainable urban farming and awareness generation among citizens towards sustainable and nature positive urban dwelling. Architect Hari Prasad Agarwal, President and Engineer Rajesh Dutta, Secretary of Urban Khet enunciated urban farming; edible, pest repellant and medicinal plants, container farming, solid waste management of residential buildings, zero budget urban farming, etc.

21 households of five buildings of Foothill Society, Birubari area of the city had participated in the said workshop. There was an drawing competition among the children of the society on sustainable urban environment. This was a nimble step towards awareness generation for encouraging community participation for urban farming with the motto to ‘To grow what you eat and eat what you grow’.

The residents,  Vaishali Jain talked about inter relation of man & nature while Rajkumar Agarwal mentioned about the garden dedicated to his late wife ‘Vidya Kanan’. Other attending the workshop includes Mitrajit Dev, Assistant professor, Department of Zoology and Kishan Bagdi, Assistant professor of Fine Arts, Royal Global University and the students of the university,  Moharana Choudhury an environmentalist also attended the workshop.
