The Department of English, Gauhati University organized the Second Homen Borgohain Memorial Lecture on November 9, 2023, at the Phanidhar Datta Seminar Hall, Gauhati University.
Ranjit Kumar Dev Goswami, former Srimanta Sankaradeva Chair Professor, Tezpur University, delivered a lecture titled “Literature and the ‘Other’ Arts: Towards an Outline History of Assamese Music.”
In his lecture Goswami explored the relationship between literature and Assamese music. He acknowledged Homen Borgohain as a literary giant who left an enduring impact across various genres. Recalling his experiences with Homen Borgohain, he shared insights into how Borgohain served as a source of inspiration for generations of young journalists and creative writers, fostering a culture of literary exploration and journalistic excellence.
The event also included the felicitation of Ajit Kumar Patowary, retired Chief Reporter of The Assam Tribune, for his dedicated service to journalism in Assam. Abani Kumar Bhagabati, former Head of the Department of Geography, Gauhati University, and a renowned author, inaugurated the talk and delivered the Inaugural Address.
The welcome speech of the programme was delivered by the Convenor Anjali Daimari followed by the addresses of Ajit Kumar Patowary and Abani Kumar Bhagabati.
The audience which included students, faculty members of the University, guests, employees and members of the press witnessed the informative session. The memorial lecture, instituted by Homen Borgohain’s son Pradipta Borgohain, in collaboration with the Department of English, aims to honour the literary icon’s memory through insightful lectures and the felicitation of notable figures in literature and journalism.
