The H.K. Barpujari memorial lecture, organised by the Gauhati University Institute of North East India studies was held at Gauhati University today, before an audience of academics, researchers and students and especially members of the family of Prof Barpujari. Prof. Pratap Jyoti Handique, the Vice Chancellor, Gauhati Univeristy was the chief guest on the occasion and he inaugurated the event. Prof. Handique in his speech remembered the life and works of Prof. H.K. Barpujari and thanked the organisers for organising such an event.
The speaker was Prof Sarah Ferber, of the University of Wollongong in Australia. The lecture was titled, HISTORY WRITING AND THE POLITICS OF ANALOGY.
Prof. Ferber spoke about the importance of historical research as a way of understanding the contemporary world. She discussed historical analogies that come from european religious history and from the history of modern medicine. Historians she said, always have a perspective, but they are always accountable to the facts.
Prof Ferber’s talk was followed by vigorous interaction with the audience.
The programme was attended by the Faculty members, students, officers, employees and members of all the stakeholders of the University.
