Supreme Court Orders Hospital Safety Overhaul After Doctor’s Tragic Death

Following the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old resident doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on August 9, 2024, the Supreme Court of India has initiated a series of measures to enhance the safety of medical professionals nationwide. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, responding to widespread protests by junior doctors, has constituted a National Task Force (NTF) to establish comprehensive safety protocols across hospitals.

The crime, which occurred within the hospital premises, sparked nationwide protests, especially among junior doctors, leading to significant disruptions in healthcare services. The incident highlighted the urgent need for better security measures, particularly for female medical staff working late-night shifts.

The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the case, ordering immediate security measures at RG Kar Medical College by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The court also mandated the removal of all images and videos of the victim from public circulation to protect her dignity.

The newly formed NTF, comprising leading medical professionals and government officials, is tasked with developing an action plan to improve hospital security, focusing on the safety of women and vulnerable medical staff. Key measures under consideration include enhancing security in critical hospital areas, implementing biometric systems, improving lighting and CCTV coverage, and providing safe transportation for staff during late-night shifts.

Thee Supreme Court has urged striking doctors to return to work, assuring them that their safety concerns are being addressed. The NTF is expected to deliver an interim report in three weeks and a final report within two months, potentially leading to significant reforms in hospital safety practices.
