Gujarat is currently experiencing severe flooding due to continuous heavy rainfall, with the death toll rising to 28 as of August 29, 2024. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red’ alert for several districts, indicating the potential for extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days. Key affected areas include Kachchh, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, and Rajkot, where rainfall amounts have reached between 50mm and 200mm in just 12 hours.
Rescue operations are underway, with six Army contingents deployed alongside the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams. Approximately 40,000 people have been evacuated from flood-affected regions, and 95 individuals have been rescued so far. The Gujarat government is prioritizing the distribution of food, water, and medical supplies to those trapped by the floods.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been in communication with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, assuring support from the Central government and emphasizing the need to protect lives and livestock.
Over 40,000 people have been evacuated from flood-affected regions. The NDRF has rescued approximately 95 individuals from areas such as Dwarka, where water has inundated homes.
Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel reported that over 12,000 people have been rescued and more than 5,000 rehabilitated as of Wednesday.
