Dibrugarh University observed the death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on November 5, 2024, as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The event featured a special lecture and was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and Dr. Pallavi Deka Bujar Baruah. Students from the Centre for Performing Arts performed Dr. Hazarika’s iconic songs, honoring his legacy and lasting impact on Assamese culture and music.
The event was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jiten Hazarika, Registrar, Dr. Paramananda Sonowal , and Chairperson of the Centre for Performing Arts, Dr. Pallavi Deka Bujarbaruah. The event also featured a special lecture by honourable Chief of Assam Child Literature Trust, Rishikesh Goswami. Students from the Centre for Performing Arts performed Dr. Hazarika’s iconic songs, honoring his legacy and his profound impact on Assamese culture and music.

The Vice-Chancellor inaugurated the event and stated, “Bhupen Hazarika stands as a pioneer among Assam’s social artists, whose songs have fostered unity and elevated the rich culture and traditions of our state. His contributions are truly remarkable, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Assam.”
The Registrar delivered the welcome address, stating “On this Remembrance Day as we gather to honor the legendary Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and reflect on his invaluable contributions to the culture and traditions of Assam.”
Highlighting on his music and it’s significance across generations, touching lives far beyond Assam, Rishikesh Goswami remarked expressed, “Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s songs resonate as profound reflections of humanity’s perspective, artfully weaving together themes of love, struggle, and social justice. His music creates deep and meaningful connections with our culture and traditions, allowing listeners to explore their own identities within the larger tapestry of Assamese heritage. Iconic pieces such as ‘Aji Ek Triyangon,’ ‘Manhu e Manhor Babe,’ and ‘Boha Bahu Brahmaputra’ beautifully illustrate this essence, each song carrying a message that transcends time and speaks to the heart of our shared humanity.”
In a moving tribute, students from the Centre for Performing Arts performed some of Dr. Hazarika’s beloved songs, echoing his timeless messages of resilience and hope. Their performances brought a wave of nostalgia and reverence to the audience, honoring his enduring influence on Assamese art and music.
