The South Bengal Frontier of the Border Security Force (BSF) has intensified its crackdown on gold smuggling along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, adapting its strategies to curb illicit activities. For the second consecutive day, BSF seized gold from smugglers, capturing a suspect in Bangaon carrying 10 gold biscuits. The seized gold weighs 1,168 grams and is valued at approximately Rs 87.76 lakh.
On 05 November 2024, BSF personnel at Border Outpost Haridaspur received specific information indicating that an Indian gold carrier would be smuggling gold from Bagdah to Bangaon. Acting on this information, BSF jawans identified a suspect on a motorcycle near the BDO office in Bangaon and immediately apprehended him. During questioning, the suspect identified himself as a resident of Krishna Chandrapur village in North 24 Parganas and admitted to carrying 10 gold biscuits. The BSF team then escorted him to the Haridaspur outpost for a thorough search, documentation, and further legal procedures.
The suspect revealed that his friend, a resident of Baira, had offered him to work as a gold carrier in October, who promised him payment for each successful delivery. He was instructed to collect gold from an unidentified individual near Krishnachandrapur and deliver it to different contacts in Bangaon. For each completed delivery, he would receive Rs 1,000. However, BSF personnel intercepted him before he could deliver the consignment.
The detained individual, along with the seized gold, has been handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Kolkata for further action.
The Public Relations Officer of BSF South Bengal Frontier commended the efforts of BSF personnel and reiterated BSF’s commitment to preventing smuggling activities along the border. He urged local residents to report any information on gold smuggling to BSF’s Seema Sathi Helpline at 14419 or via WhatsApp at 9903472227. He assured that informants would be rewarded and their identities kept confidential.
