The 19th edition of the Lt. Col. Rajeev Bakhshi, SM (P) Memorial Football Tournament came to a thrilling end on January 20, 2025, with a wreath laying in the memory of Lt Col Rajeev Bakshi SM (P) followed by the final match at the Mini Stadium in Parbung, Pherzawl District, Manipur. Organized by the Assam Rifles, “Friends of the North East,” this annual tournament has become a beacon of sportsmanship and camaraderie in the region.
The tournament is held in the memory of Lt. Col. Rajeev Bakhshi, who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty while fighting insurgents in Manipur on January 20, 2006. His bravery and selflessness has inspired generations and this tournament is a testament to his enduring legacy.
This year’s tournament saw 16 teams from Pherzawl, Churachandpur, and Mizoram compete in a series of league matches, quarterfinals, and semifinals. The final match was played between Parbung Youth Club from Pherzawl district and Sawkawrdai GSA from Mizoram, with a huge crowd gathering of approximately 5000 to cheer their teams.
In a nail-biting finish, Sawkawrdai GSA emerged as the champions, defeating Parbung Youth Club with a score of 2-1. The Assam Rifles’ commitment to fostering youth engagement and promoting peace through sports is evident in this tournament. By bringing together teams from different regions, the tournament promotes unity, sportsmanship, and a sense of harmony.
