Sikkim’s Eminent Folk Singer Naren Gurung Honoured with Prestigious Padma Shri

Naren Gurung is a renowned folk artist from Soreng, Sikkim, who has been honored with the Padma Shri award for his extraordinary contributions to Sikkimese and Nepali folk music and dance.

At 70 years old, he is popularly known as the “Nepali Geet ke Guru” and has dedicated over six decades to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Artistic Contributions

Gurung has dedicated 60 years to preserving and promoting Sikkimese Nepali folk music and dance traditions.

Worked on reviving Bhutia and Lepcha cultural traditions.

Gurung’s lifelong dedication to cultural preservation was celebrated on the eve of India’s 76th Republic Day, when he was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri, highlighting his immense impact on maintaining and propagating traditional Sikkimese art forms.

The Padma awards are one of the highest civilian honours of India announced by Government of India annually on the eve of Republic day.
