The Indian National Congress has appointed Gaurav Gogoi as the new President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), replacing Bhupen Kumar Borah. The decision, approved by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, was announced on May 26, 2025, and takes immediate effect .
Gaurav Gogoi, currently serving as the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and representing the Jorhat constituency, is the son of the late Tarun Gogoi, Assam’s longest-serving Chief Minister. His appointment is seen as a strategic move by the Congress to rejuvenate its leadership in Assam ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, positioning him as a potential chief ministerial candidate .
In addition to Gogoi’s elevation, the party has appointed Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey, and Pradip Sarkar as working presidents of the APCC. The outgoing president, Bhupen Kumar Borah, has been named the chairperson of the Campaign Committee, while other key appointments include Debabrata Saikia as head of the Coordination Committee, Pradyut Bordoloi as chair of the Manifesto Committee, and Rakibul Hussain leading the Publicity Committee .
This leadership overhaul reflects the Congress’s efforts to strengthen its organizational structure and electoral strategy in Assam, aiming to regain political ground in the state.
