Air India Flight AI171 Crashes Near Ahmedabad Airport with 242 Passengers Onboard

A tragic aviation accident occurred today when Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 242 passengers, crashed shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The flight was bound for London Gatwick Airport.

The crash happened within five minutes of departure, near the Meghani Nagar residential area close to the airport. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud noise followed by thick black smoke rising from the crash site, visible from several kilometers away. The aircraft caught fire upon impact, prompting an immediate response from fire and rescue services who rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames and carry out rescue operations.

At the time of reporting, the exact cause of the crash remains unknown, and investigations are underway. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has dispatched a team from Delhi to Ahmedabad to assist in the inquiry. Air India confirmed the incident on their official social media channel, stating that they are currently ascertaining the details and will provide updates as soon as possible.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken with the Gujarat Chief Minister, Home Minister, and Ahmedabad Police Commissioner to take stock of the situation and assured full support from the central government for relief and rescue efforts.

Emergency services continue to work at the crash site amid widespread panic in the area. The status of passengers and crew members remains unconfirmed, with authorities yet to release official information on casualties or survivors. The crash has triggered a massive emergency response, with ambulances and fire tenders actively engaged in rescue operations.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed profound grief and shock over the tragic incident in Ahmedabad today. He stated that the tragedy has stunned and saddened the nation and described it as heartbreaking beyond words.  

Modi said that he has been in continuous communication with Ministers and relevant authorities to ensure swift and effective assistance to those impacted.  

In a post on X, PM Modi wrote:

“The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected.”
