A strong spell of unseasonal early morning rain submerged several areas and streets of Dibrugarh town on Saturday causing problems for commuters. The heavy downpour affected all 22 wards of the town in different proportion.
The busy Mancotta Road which is the lifeline of Dibrugarh town also witnessed waterlogging near the flyover as overflowing water from the side drains spilled into the road. Several arterial roads including the RKB Road, KC Gogoi Road and Convoy Road also witnessed moderate waterlogging. The worst affected road was the VKV road which was inundated in knee-deep waters.
The flash flood also affected residential areas like New Khalihamari, West Milannagar,
Jiban Phukan Nagar, Lachit Nagar, Chowkidinghee, Khaniagaon, Gangapara, Padum Nagar, Santipara, Guardpara and Graham Bazar as rain water gushed into several households.
Meanwhile due to waterlogging, the post-Durga Puja road cleaning work in the municipal areas have been hampered. During the Durga Puja immersion procession, all the major roads were littered by plastic wrappers, bottles and other wastes.
“We have cleaned up most of the roads of the town which were littered during Durga Puja. Due to limited sanitation workers we could not clean up all the roads. And now the rainwater is hampering the works. Once the road dries up we will finish the job,” Dibrugarh Municipal Board vice chairman Ujjal Phukon said.
An official of the water resources department said that Dibrugarh witnessed 34.56 mm of rainfall on Saturday while 63.50 mm of rainfall was recorded on Friday. The Brahmaputra on the other hand was flowing at a level of 104.65 metre in Dibrugarh on Saturday as against the danger level of 105.70 metre.
“We are expecting mild to moderate to spell of sporadic rainfall in the next couple of days. After that there will be dry weather,” an official of the water resources department said.
