Training on natural dyeing, natural dye-based Eri silk entrepreneurship

A one-day training on natural dyeing for women’s collective and micro-entrepreneurs was organised by DST STI Hub, Department of Zoology, Nowgong College (Autonomous) in collaboration with Aaranyak, PIRBI and Chandrasing Rongpi Memorial School at the Chandrasing Rongpi Community Resource Centre, Kohora in Kaziranga landscape in Assam.

The training programme, part of the alternative sustainable livelihood (ASL) initiative, focused on equipping participants with comprehensive knowledge of sericulture practices and natural dyeing techniques.

Dr. Bhuban Ch. Chutia, Principal Investigator of DST STI Hub, Department of Zoology, Nowgong College and Jyotimoyee Machary, President of Anajoree Handloom, Manoha Morigaon, enriched the event with their presence and expertise.

The workshop centered on sustainable practices, in fabric and yarn dyeing, incorporating locally available natural materials such as turmeric, onion peels, and marigold flowers.

Participants received hands-on training in creating seven different natural colours for dyeing, emphasizing eco-friendly and sustainable sourcing methods. The programme also included detailed instruction on sericulture, management practices and moth species identification.

A significant aspect of the training was its focus on preserving traditional crafts while promoting environmental consciousness. The participants learned to blend creative traditional techniques with sustainable practices, enabling them to create eco-friendly products while developing skilled to produce marketable products.
