Dispur, January 12: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma handed over appointment letter to Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain as deputy superintendent of police in Assam Police as per the state government’s sports policy in a function held at Janata Bhawan today.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said that in contemporary history of Assam, the day Lovlina Borgohain won an Olympic medal was a very proud day for the people of the state. The Chief Minister said that starting with the first Olympic Medal to receiving the country’s highest sports award, Lovlina has made the people of the state proud.
Stating that he was very happy to appoint Lovlina Borgohain as DSP as per state sports policy, Dr. Sarma said that the ace boxer in her service life has a bright chance of being nominated as an IPS officer in future, considering her age and the number of APS officers appointed in 2021 batch.
Commenting that Assam police has a golden history in the field of sports, the Chief Minister said that renowned players like Gilbertson Sangma, Jewel Bey raised the stature of Assam Police with their remarkable sporting talent. Dr. Sarma hoped that Lovlina Borgohain, as an officer of Assam police, would give the force a chance to be more proud in the field of sports.
The Chief Minister said that sports is no longer a co-curricular activity as before, rather it has become a part of the main curriculum. Today opportunities have emerged to get coveted jobs like APS or any gazetted posts through excellent sporting skills. He said there is a need for a complete change in our society’s approach to sports. He said that the government is taking all possible steps to strengthen sports infrastructure in the state, but only by building infrastructure, success in sports cannot be achieved, proper training and sportsmanship are also essential.
Saying that identifying talent at the right time is the key to success, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of creating a system for finding out sports talent at the grassroot level.
The Chief Minister said sports can play an important role in the intellectual and social transformation of the youth by engaging in constructive activities and is the best way to get rid of youth’s addiction to drugs. He also mentioned that there is a need to build a multi-pronged sports environment by organizing inter-police station level sports competitions, panchayat level sports competitions, inter-garden sports competitions etc. among people. Several ministers of the state government including Sports Minister Bimal Bora, several MLAs, Chief Secretary Jishu Baruah, DGP Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, principal secretary of the home department as well as senior officials of the administration and Assam police, parents of Lovlina Borgohain and several prominent sports organisers of the state were present on the occasion.
