Tezpur University celebrated inSCIgnis, one of the biggest Science Fest of North East India, on the occasion of “National Science Day”. National Science Day is celebrated in India each year to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman on 28 February 1928. This year marked the 9th edition of inSCIgnis with the student fraternity of Tezpur University celebrating the science fest with much gusto from February 27 to March 1, 2022.
Ms. Birubala Rabha, known for her campaigns against witchcraft and witch hunting and a Padma Shri awardee graced the inaugural ceremony on February 27, 2022. Speaking on the occasion Ms. Rabha described her struggles to set up Mission Birubala, which spreads awareness against witch hunting. She further emphasized on the need for scientific temperament amongst the upcoming generation to liberate the society from the various social evils. She also reiterated the need for woman participation to the cause at large.
Dr. Arup Kumar Dutta, noted writer and a Padma Shri awardee graced the inaugural ceremony as Chief Guest. He highlighted how scientific vigour is neglected and its prowess goes unnoticed in the labyrinth of political quagmire. He further added how science must respect basic ethical guideline while promoting its advancement.
Prof. V.K.Jain, Vice Chancellor, Tezpur university graced the event and expressed his gratitude towards the guest of honour and inspired the gathering with the essence of National Science Day celebration. Dean of School of Sciences also highlighted how proper knowledge of science can improve technology and thereby the social welfare as a whole.
The Registrar and Dean Student’s Welfare also adorned the occasion.
“The fest has provided an opportunity for everyone to learn and enjoy fun side of science”, Dr. Bipul Sarma, Faculty Coordinator of the fest said. The “inSCIgnis’22 hosted a plethora of events involving competitions that aimed at bringing out interesting and fascinating aspects of science that inculcate inquisitiveness to realise and propagate the real essence of science, Dr. Sarma further added.
The three-day celebrations of science hosted 5 National Level Conferences organized by the respective 5 departments of School of Sciences, viz. Dept. of Chemical Sciences, Dept. of Physics, Dept. of Mathematical Sciences, Dept. of Environmental Science and Dept. of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology on 1st March 2022. Moreover, the fest also hosted some brainstorming quizzes, the North East Regional Level Science Exhibition (NERLSE), astronomy events, chemistry magic show, departmental events to popularise science.
