Patharighat Commemoration Day on 30 January

Indian Army alongwith Assam Government will be paying homage to martyrs of Patharighat on 30 January 2023 in a solemn ceremony at the Patharighat War Memorial.

The event is being organised to remember the sacrifice made on 28 January 1894 by 140 innocent farmers who were brutally massacred and 150 others were injured at Patharighat when they rose in protest against the unjustified increase in land revenue by the British Empire. Farmers belonging to different communities and religion had risen against the British tyranny as a cohesive force and Assam emerged as one of the pioneers and forerunners in India’s quest for independence.

To commemorate this historic milestone of India’s freedom struggle, a memorial was constructed at Patharighat by Indian Army with cooperation of the local population and dedicated to sacrifice and valour of martyrs by the then Governor of Assam Lieutenant General (Retd) SK Sinha, PVSM, AVSM on 28 January 2001.

The event will be graced by the presence of Lt Gen RP Kalita, GOC-in-C Eastern Comd and other dignitaries of state Govt and Indian Army.
