BSF Jawans Foil Gold Smuggling Attempt at ICP Petrapole, Apprehend Three Smugglers with Gold Ornaments Worth Over Rs. 1 Crore

The Border Security Force jawans apprehended three smugglers red-handed while attempting to smuggle gold ornaments worth more than one crore rupees at ICP Petrapole in North 24 Parganas district on May 2nd, 2023, at about 1605 hours. The troops of ICP Petrapole, 145 Battalion, under South Bengal Frontier foiled the smuggling attempt and caught three smugglers who were posing as passengers at the passenger terminal.

During the security check, the jawans seized 1.789 kg of gold ornaments from the possession of the smugglers, with an estimated value of Rs.1,07,37,349/-. The smugglers had concealed the gold ornaments in their clothes, and the HHMD machine beeped during their security check, leading to a thorough search, which resulted in the recovery of the gold.

The apprehended smugglers were identified as Sujon Khan (Male), District North 24 Parganas, Suvechha Biswas (Female), and Pampa Khan (Female), District South 24 Parganas. During interrogation, Sujon Khan revealed that he was involved in this type of smuggling for a long time and that the gold ornaments were given to him by a Bangladeshi smuggler named Rauni from District Khulna, Bangladesh.

He contacted the two female co-travelers, Suvechha Biswas and Pampa Khan, to complete the work and lured them with some money. Both the co-travelers agreed to participate in the smuggling. After coming to India, Sujon Khan was about to hand over the jewelry to Lucky Biswas, a resident of Howrah, Kolkata, but the BSF jawans nabbed him on the spot.

The apprehended smugglers and the seized gold ornaments were handed over to the Custom Office, Petrapole. A spokesperson for the South Bengal Frontier, BSF, commended the vigilance and understanding of the BSF jawans and expressed satisfaction with their success in intercepting the smugglers and seizing the gold.

The Border Security Force urges people living on the border to report any information related to gold smuggling to BSF’s Seema Saathi helpline number, 14419. Additionally, South Bengal Frontier has issued another number, 9903472227, on which WhatsApp or voice messages related to gold smuggling can be sent. People who provide concrete information will receive a suitable reward, and their identity will be kept confidential.
