UNDER THE RIVER METRO CARRIED 7.5 LAKHS PASSENGERS IN 17 DAY

Under the River stretch of Green Line of Kolkata Metro has carried 7.5 lakhs passengers in the last 17 days of the last fiscal. Much to the delight of the Metro users and suburban passengers of Eastern Railway as well as South Eastern Railway, commercial service on Howrah Maidan to Esplanade stretch of Green Line under the river Hooghly has started from March 15, 2024.

From day one this stretch has been drawing thousands of commuters. At present there are four Metro stations dotting this stretch i.e. Howrah Maidan, Howrah, Mahakaran and Esplanade and services on this stretch are available from Monday to Saturday. Esplanade Metro station acts as an interchanging station between Green Line and Blue Line.

Maximum passenger count, 3.15 lakhs has been registered at Howrah station followed by Howrah Maidan station (2.55 lakhs) on this stretch.

As under the river stretch of Kolkata Metro has connected two century old cities Howrah and Kolkata under the river Hooghly as well as has been offering fastest mode of transport to reach the heart of Kolkata from Howrah and also connecting the Blue Line, which was unthinkable so far, it is expected that passenger count on this stretch will further increase in this financial year.

Kausik Mitra,Chief Public Relations Officer, Metro Railway stated this in a release.
