Survey reports from the Forest Department, Odisha, dated 20 February 2025, present encouraging findings: a total of 5,55,638 eggs have been safely laid by the endangered Olive Ridley turtles at Rushikulya and Devi River mouth to Astrang off the Odisha coast. This remarkable achievement underscores the collective conservation efforts toward wildlife protection. Conservationists have established protected areas along Odisha’s coastline, ensuring these nesting sites remain free from human interference—whether through seaward poaching or disturbance from leisure activities.

Since 1991, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has provided continuous assistance to central and state authorities/agencies in protecting these endangered species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Operation Olivia – Current Season Update

As of 20 February 2025, the ongoing mass nesting season of Olive Ridley turtles has yielded positive results:
– Rushikulya: 6,126 nests with 5,51,238 eggs.
– Devi River mouth to Astrang: 60 nests with 5,400 eggs, though nesting remains sporadic in this region.

Entrusted with the preservation and protection of the maritime environment, the ICG, in coordination with the State Fisheries and Forest Departments, has been conducting Operation Olivia since 1 November 2024, with operations continuing until 31 May 2025.

Key Efforts Under Operation Olivia

– Community Awareness & Sensitization: The ICG conducts periodic social awareness drives and special community interaction programs to educate coastal communities and fishing populations.
– Monitoring of Fishing Activities: Fishing vessels/boats operating near marine reserve/protected areas are regularly monitored for compliance with the mandatory use of Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs).
– Deployment of ICG Assets: To protect nesting turtles and enforce environmental legislation:
– 29 ICG ships have been deployed for a total of 138 days.
– ICG aircraft have conducted surveillance for approximately 65 hours.
– 150 fishing boats have been boarded and investigated to ensure strict adherence to laws.

These relentless efforts by the Indian Coast Guard, in collaboration with other agencies, have significantly reduced casualties and continue to ensure a safe and conducive environment for the Olive Ridley turtles during their nesting season.
