Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for Textiles and External Affairs, visited the Central Silk Board’s Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organization (MESSO) in Guwahati.
MESSO, with 13 field units across Northeast India and Tamil Nadu, is vital to the region’s sericulture, supporting the production of quality Muga and Eri silkworm seeds.
Margherita praised the transformation of Northeast sericulture into a thriving industry, providing significant livelihoods, particularly for tribal women.
He highlighted MESSO’s efforts to expand Muga culture to cooler regions like Kalimpong in West Bengal and Uttarakhand to counter climate change impacts. He encouraged increased seed production efficiency to meet national demand for Muga and Eri silk.
The Minister underscored the need for collaboration between central and state departments to drive sustainable silk industry growth, employment, and traditional craftsmanship.
