Two BJP MPs, Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, were admitted to the ICU of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after sustaining head injuries during a scuffle in Parliament on December 19, 2024. The incident occurred amid protests related to comments made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding B.R. Ambedkar, which led to a confrontation between members of the ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc.
The medical superintendent of the RML Hospital said the news agency PTI both the MPs have been administered medicines to manage their blood pressure, pain and anxiety while investigations like CT scan of the head and cardiac tests were underway. “Both of them are in ICU. We are trying to stabilise them,” the doctor said.
The altercation began when opposition MPs attempted to enter Parliament while BJP MPs were holding a protest against perceived insults to Ambedkar. Tensions escalated as both sides accused each other of using force. The BJP MP Sarangi alleged that he was pushed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, which led to his injury. Gandhi, on his part, claimed he was also pushed while trying to enter Parliament.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out to both injured MPs to inquire about their health. The incident has sparked further political tensions, with accusations flying between the BJP and Congress regarding the conduct of their respective members during the protests.
Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Pralhad Joshi met Sarangi and the hospital to inquire about his well-being. Chouhan told reporters that Sarangi received a few stitches to stop the bleeding.
Congress MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and submitted a complaint against the alleged unruly conduct of BJP MPs against Rahul Gandhi and stopping him from entering Parliament House.
