A retired police officer was shot dead by a probationary sub-inspector (SI) of police in Dhemaji district on Saturday morning over a land related dispute.
The victim identified as Amulya Barua was shot dead at Bhehpara village by one Alok Konwar, a probationary sub-inspector currently posted at Dibrugarh police station. Konwar fired two fatal shots at the former cop hitting him on his head and back. He died on the spot before he could receive any treatment. After committing the crime the accused surrendered at the Dhemaji police station. According to police, the incident took place at around 9.40am.
Police said that the victim had retired as the superintendent of police from Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Siang district in 2017. After his retirement Konwar had settled in Suraj Nagar area of Dhemaji with his wife and son. Recently he had purchased another plot of land at Bhehpara village adjacent to the residence of the accused. According to police both of them had an ongoing dispute over the demarcation of their respective land boundaries. On Saturday morning there was a heated argument between the two leading to the fatal shooting.
Dhemaji SP Ranjan Bhuyan said, “The victim who was a retired police officer from Arunachal Pradesh was shot by Alok Konwar who is a probationary sub-inspector currently posted in Dibrugarh police station. He fired two rounds with his service pistol. Both of them were neighbours. We have come to know that they were involved in a land related dispute over construction of a boundary wall. Neither of them had approached the police or the revenue department to sort out the issue. Today morning the accused policeman came from Dibrugarh bringing his service pistol along. There was a heated argument between the two that led to the fatal incident. Two shots were fired by the accused. We have seized his service pistol while two blank cartridges were recovered from the site. The accused surrendered before the police after committing the crime and we are currently interrogating him.”
