International Day of Women and Girls in Science observed at Tezpur University

Tezpur University in collaboration with Indian National Young Academy of Sciences (INYAS)  organized ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’ (IDWGiS). INYAS in the first and only recognized young scientist academy of India.

The ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’ is an annual observance adopted by the United Nations General Assembly to promote the full and equal access and participation of woman in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The United Nations General Assembly passed resolution on 22 December 2015 to declare the 11th day of February as the annual commemoration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The theme of the 8th International Day of Women and Girls in Science is IDEAS i.e Innovate, Demonstrate, Elevate, Advance, Sustain. One of the members of INYAS, Dr. Pankaj Barah, Dept. of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, Tezpur University coordinated the event. Nearly 130 female science students from neighboring Biswanath College, Biswanath Science Academy, Rangapara College, and Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das (LOKD) College participated in the event along with 10 accompanying women faculty members from the participating institutes,

The program started with an inspiring speech by Prof. Nashreen S. Islam, Department of Chemical Sciences, Tezpur University. Dr. Rupjyoti Gogoi and Dr. Bhim Prasad Sharma of Tezpur University gave two popular science lectures. A panel discussion followed by interactive mentoring session was conducted by Dr. Rashmi Devi, Scientist-E, Defence Research Laboratory (DRL), Tezpur.


A host of faculty members from various departments of the University took part in the event and interacted with the young students. Dr. Dalima Kakati from the Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das College beautifully summarized the event, and mentioned about the link between language, art and science.

Later in the afternoon, the students were taken around the campus of Tezpur University to show them different advanced scientific facilities.
