Women Candidates Take Center Stage in Guwahati Lok Sabha Elections 2024

In the heart of Assam, the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency is gearing up for a fierce electoral battle in the upcoming third phase of the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for May 7.

With a history of political significance and a sprawling electorate of 1,922,270 eligible voters, Guwahati is witnessing a pivotal moment as women candidates step into the spotlight, shaping the political landscape like never before.

This electoral battleground, encompassing the largest district in Assam and the entire northeast region, is no stranger to intense competition. As key political parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and  Congress. it’s the women candidates who are making waves.

Leading the charge for the BJP is Bijuli Kalita Medhi, the party’s vice-president in Assam and former head of the women’s wing. Medhi’s candidacy marks a significant moment as she steps into the arena for the first time, aiming to represent the aspirations of the people of Guwahati on a national stage.

Challenging her is Mira Barthakur Goswami, the Congress nominee who joined the party after being expelled from the BJP in 2018. Goswami brings her own brand of leadership and vision to the table, determined to carve out a path for herself and her party in the dynamic political landscape of Guwahati.
The battle between these two formidable women candidates is reminiscent of past electoral showdowns, where women have played pivotal roles in shaping the destiny of Guwahati. In the previous parliamentary elections of 2019, the constituency witnessed a fierce contest between BJP’s Queen Oja and Congress’s Bobbeeta Sarma, highlighting the growing influence of women in politics. Reflecting on the legacy of women leaders who have represented Guwahati, including stalwarts like Bijoya Chakravarty and Rohini Kumar Choudhury, it’s clear that women have always been an integral part of the political fabric of the region.

As the countdown to the Lok Sabha elections enters its final phase, all eyes are on Guwahati, where women candidates are not just participants but architects of change, shaping the course of history with their determination, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the people they seek to represent.
